I know this because that's what Gabe does.
He notices. He just doesn't always say so.
I can't tell him.
Not because I don't want to.
Because telling him puts him in the middle
of something he shouldn't be in the middle of.
He wouldn't understand why I can't explain why I can't tell him.
Which would make the silence harder. Not easier.
There is one person in that building with whom I laugh like I mean it.
Not the performed version.
The real one. The one that arrives before I can decide.
I have not laughed like that in three months.
